One day I will write about the African version of war and peas. For most African families good food is the foundation of genuine happiness.  Food is much more than its nutritive function. It is central to many social and religious traditions. Food is symbolic and expressive. You know you are welcome when you are offered something to eat. Food is memories. Food is more than a body’s fuel. It’s deep. One day this author will write about the African version of war and peas

In this episode, we are proud to present to you berbere a traditional Ethiopian spice blend composed of chiles, garlic, fenugreek, and a handful of other spices. It’s one of the gifts to the world. I wish I could teach you how to make roasted Carrots dressed with berbere. But my cooking skills are wanting. I might let you google it. The only reason I have a kitchen is that it came with the house!  How do I know I am a bad cook? Pest control companies keep pestering me for my recipes. I still cook though. I treat my family like ancient African gods; they get a burnt offering at every meal.

Now go off and make an African inspired mouthwatering dish. Spice up your life. I won’t be impressed with technology until my stove gets a “Save As button”. You know, like the one MSWord has. And the day I can download food from the internet. But I like the fact that Africans living in the USA can now get African spices on Amazon.
